Orthodox Church celebrates Conception of Saint John the Baptist
The Orthodox Church celebrates the Conception of Saint John the Baptist on September 23. This feast commemorates the biblical account where the Archangel Gabriel appeared to the priest Zechariah in the Temple, announcing that his elderly and barren wife, Elizabeth, would conceive a son named John.
According to tradition, John the Baptist would serve as a precursor to Jesus Christ, preparing the way for His ministry. The narrative notes that Zechariah initially doubted the angelic message due to his advanced age, resulting in him being rendered mute until the child was born and named.
In addition to celebrating Saint John, the day honors the martyr Irene (also known as Raisa), a devout Christian from Alexandria who faced execution for her faith. The religious calendar also observes various customs for the day, including fasting and specific spiritual reflections on the power of prayer and divine providence.
