Orange infant murders mother detained five babies French prosecutor

Police discovered the skeletal remains of four infants and the decomposing body of a newborn in an apartment in Orange, Vaucluse, France, in late July 2026. The victims are believed to have died between April 2018 and October 2025.

A 32‑year‑old mother was arrested after giving birth at home, placed in pre‑trial detention and presented to a judge for indictment on murder of minors under 15. The prosecutor’s office of Avignon (formerly Carpentras) opened an information judicial for the same offence. Her 32‑year‑old partner, who alerted authorities after finding the remains, was released from custody.

The couple’s two other children, aged eight and nine, were placed with relatives, while the newborn, born healthy, was placed under the protection of a child‑welfare judge. The case is being treated as the most serious recent infanticide in France.
