Saint-Étienne pursues economic renewal through design and engineering
The city of Saint-Étienne is pursuing economic revitalization through diverse industrial and creative sectors. Since 2010, the city has utilized design as an economic driver, centered around the Cité du design and its international biennial. While design enhances the city's image and attracts investment, the local economy remains anchored by mechanical engineering, photonics, and medtech industries.
In support of France's industrial sovereignty, the engineering school Mines Saint-Étienne is undergoing a transformation scheduled for 2026. The institution aims to strengthen ties with the private sector through increased research and responsive training programs. Key initiatives include the Digital Region Campus in Charbonnières-les-Bains and the 'Accès Campus' program, which facilitates connections between students and companies, including major partners like Airbus.
