Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and Camaret-sur-Mer draw growing tourist interest
The Normandy port of Saint‑Vaast‑la‑Hougue, facing the island of Tatihou, has become a sought‑after destination. At low tide the island can be reached on foot, while the two 17th‑century Vauban stone towers that guard the bay are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The harbour supports both fishing and pleasure sailing, and the surrounding oyster beds are a hallmark of the local cuisine.
In Brittany, the small Finistère harbour of Camaret‑sur‑Mer is experiencing a similar rise in visitors. Its historic Vauban tower, also a UNESCO site, overlooks a natural tombolo that links the town to the sea. Tourists are attracted by the authentic Breton atmosphere, coastal trails, and fresh seafood such as lobster and scallops. New guest‑houses opened between 2023 and 2025 have helped accommodate the increasing flow of holidaymakers seeking alternatives to crowded resorts.
Both villages illustrate how historic coastal ports with UNESCO‑protected fortifications are gaining popularity as quieter, culturally rich holiday spots in France.
