Saint Vincent de Paul: Patron of charitable works
The Catholic Church commemorates Saint Vincent de Paul, a priest recognized as the patron of charitable works. Born around 1580 or 1581 in Pouy, near Dax in southwestern France, he rose from a modest peasant family to pursue an ecclesiastical career through studies in Toulouse and Zaragoza.
Originally seeking personal and economic security, his life underwent a profound conversion after encountering the suffering of the poor, the sick, and the abandoned. He dedicated his priesthood to serving the marginalized, famously recognizing the face of God in those in need.
Saint Vincent de Paul founded the Congregation of the Mission (Vincentians) and, alongside Saint Louise de Marillac, established the Daughters of Charity. His legacy focuses on restoring the life of the early Church through holy priesthood and active service to the impoverished.
