Saint Wenceslas monument: History and symbolism in Prague
The monument of Saint Wenceslas on Wenceslas Square in Prague serves as a significant historical and cultural landmark. Before the current bronze equestrian statue by Josef Václav Myslbek, a sandstone statue by Jan Jiří Bendl stood in the area, having been moved to Vyšehrad in 1879.
Myslbek’s monument, which depicts the saint as an armed prince rather than a blessing figure, was selected following a competition in 1894. The site has historically functioned as a major gathering point for the Czech people.
Historically, the figure of Saint Wenceslas has been interpreted in various ways, ranging from a symbol of national hope and protection to a symbol of subordination or collaboration. Discussions regarding his reign often touch upon his political cooperation with the church and his interactions with Saxon rulers, including the circumstances surrounding his death.
