Saints Cosmas and Damian Celebrated as Healing Patrons in Serbia

The Serbian Orthodox Church marks July 14 as the feast of Saints Cosmas and Damian, popularly known as the "Sveti Vrači" or Holy Healers. According to tradition, the brothers were physicians who treated the sick without charge, asking only for faith in Jesus Christ. Their self‑less service earned them the title of "besrebrenici" (unpaid healers) and made them protectors of doctors, patients and anyone seeking recovery.

The holiday is observed with specific customs: many believers stay indoors, avoid heavy work, and pray for health and protection from illness and even lightning. Icons and frescoes depict the saints in medieval attire carrying medicine boxes, and a notable fresco is housed in the Patriarchate of Peć. The Serbian Medical Chamber officially recognized the day in 2007, and the celebration is also a family patron saint day for many households. The feast is observed twice a year, on July 14 and again on November 14, and remains a prominent cultural and religious event across Serbia.
