Saints Cosmas and Damian honored as patron physicians

The Christian Church celebrates the feast day of Saints Cosmas and Damian on September 26. Traditionally identified as twin brothers from Arabia, they were physicians who practiced medicine in Syria and Cilicia during the 3rd century.

Known as “anargyroi” (the silverless) because they provided medical care and surgical interventions free of charge, the brothers are venerated as patrons of physicians, surgeons, and pharmacists. Their ministry combined scientific rigor with religious devotion, often focusing on the spiritual well-being of the poor.

During the persecutions under Emperor Diocletian, the brothers were arrested and martyred. Various hagiographic traditions describe their suffering, including torture and beheading. Their legacy is preserved through numerous basilicas, such as the one in Rome's Forum Romanum, and widespread cultural celebrations across Italy, the Middle East, and other regions.
