Saints Crispin and Crispinian commemorated on October 25
The Catholic Church commemorates Saints Crispin and Crispinian on October 25, honoring the two Roman brothers recognized as martyrs and patrons of shoemakers, tanners, and leatherworkers.
Originating from a noble Roman family, the brothers traveled to Gaul to engage in missionary work. To support themselves and provide charity to the poor, they practiced the craft of shoemaking. Their religious activities led to a confrontation with the co-emperor Maximianus, who attempted to persuade them to renounce their faith.
After refusing to yield, they were handed over to the persecutor Rictiovarus. Following various ordeals, including torture and attempts at drowning and fire, the brothers were ultimately executed by beheading around 285 or 286 AD. A basilica was later constructed over their burial site in Soissons.
