Saints Ponzian and Hippolytus commemorated as martyrs

The Catholic Church commemorates the feast of Saints Ponzian and Hippolytus on August 13. The two figures are recognized for their shared martyrdom during the persecutions under the Roman Emperor Maximinus Thrax in the early 3rd century.

Ponzian served as the Bishop of Rome from 230 to 235. Following his condemnation and deportation to the mines of Sardinia, he became the first historically documented pope to resign his office to avoid leaving the Church without leadership. Hippolytus, a Roman presbyter and theologian once known for leading a schism, was also deported to Sardinia, where he reconciled with the Church and shared Ponzian's fate.

Their relics were later returned to Rome and interred in the Catacombs of Callixtus and along the Via Tiburtina, respectively.
