Sairaj Bahutule proposes free hits in Test cricket to reduce no-balls

India's spin bowling coach, Sairaj Bahutule, has proposed the introduction of free hits in Test cricket to address the increasing issue of no-balls. The suggestion comes as the Indian team struggled with overstepping during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, where the spin unit conceded 10 no-balls.

Bahutule noted that no-balls often occur when bowlers over-exert themselves while attempting to break partnerships in difficult situations. While acknowledging this is not an excuse, he suggested that implementing a consequence similar to those in T20I and ODI formats would discourage bowlers from overstepping.

Statistical data highlights the scale of the issue for the Indian squad, noting that Jasprit Bumrah has bowled 106 no-balls since TV umpires began calling them, while Ravindra Jadeja has bowled 89. The proposal aims to ensure that bowlers face a tangible penalty for illegal deliveries in the longest format of the game.
