Saizeriya announces first major price hike since 1999

Italian restaurant chain Saizeriya has announced its first major price increase since its 1999 listing, raising prices on over 80% of its products by an average of 6% starting on the 29th. Some locations in urban areas or near leisure facilities will see an average increase of 10%. For example, the signature Milano-style Doria will rise from 300 yen to 320 yen.

The company attributed the move to rising ingredient costs and supply shortages, stating that they could no longer absorb these costs through internal efforts. Despite the hike, the company has maintained low prices on certain items, such as 100-yen wine, and even reduced the price of beer to 390 yen. This strategic approach has garnered significant praise and sympathy from consumers on social media.

Beyond pricing, Saizeriya is noted for its rigorous operational systems. The company utilizes a scientific approach to quality, evaluating food based on five axes: Look, Aroma, Taste, Flavor, and Price. This emphasis on standardized manuals and systematic training is highlighted as a model for businesses struggling with labor shortages and rising costs.
