Sajjan Kumar's 1984 riots murder appeal abated by Delhi High Court

The Delhi High Court has closed an appeal filed by former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar against his conviction in a murder case stemming from the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. The decision follows Kumar's death on August 20.

Kumar was serving two life sentences in Tihar jail. The specific case addressed by the court involved the killings of Jaswant Singh and his son, Tarundeep Singh, in Saraswati Vihar on November 1, 1984. The trial court had previously convicted Kumar for participating in a mob that set fire to the victims' house, killed them, and looted their belongings.

The 1984 riots occurred in Delhi following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In addition to this case, Kumar had previously been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Delhi High Court in 2018 for a separate incident involving the killing of five Sikhs and the burning of a gurdwara.
