Sakarya floods cause widespread damage and school closures

Heavy rainfall in Sakarya, Turkey, has caused significant flooding and infrastructure damage. In the Karasu district, particularly in the Darıçayırı neighborhood, overflowing dam waters submerged homes, businesses, and agricultural lands, with water levels reaching over 1 meter in some areas. Emergency teams from AFAD, the Coast Guard, and local municipalities have conducted rescue operations, successfully evacuating several people stranded by the floods.

The severe weather has disrupted daily life, leading to the suspension of classes at 18 schools across the Akyazı, Erenler, Karapürçek, and Karasu districts. Additionally, landslides have affected transportation, including the D-100 highway in Serdivan, and several bridges have been closed due to rising waters.

On a positive note, the intense precipitation has significantly replenished local water resources. Sapanca Lake's water level rose by 30 centimeters, gaining approximately 15 million cubic meters of water, which SASKİ reports is sufficient to meet the city's drinking water needs for roughly three months.
