India's CJI Surya Kant declines meeting with opposition leaders

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has declined a request from INDIA bloc leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, to meet regarding alleged electoral irregularities. The CJI stated in a letter that the issues raised, including concerns over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, are already sub judice. He emphasized that convening a meeting to discuss pending cases would contravene the principle of Separation of Powers and judicial propriety.

The refusal has sparked political tension. Members of the Congress party, including Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, argued that the meeting was a necessary attempt to safeguard democracy and the right to vote. Conversely, the BJP criticized the move, with leaders accusing Rahul Gandhi of attempting to politicize constitutional institutions and intimidate the judiciary.

In Delhi, protests against the Election Commission led to the detention of several individuals, including leaders from the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das, and Ashutosh Ranka were released by a Special Executive Magistrate court under conditions to maintain peace and good behavior.
