Sakharov Prize 2026 finalists include ICC and Tundu Lissu
The European Parliament has announced the finalists for the 2026 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. The three primary finalists selected by the Parliament's committees are the International Criminal Court (ICC), Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu, and Iranian twin sisters Taraneh and Romina Rahimi, who were both convicted by Tehran.
Other candidates included in the initial selection are Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, Palestinian doctor Hussam Abu Safiya—who has been detained without charge since late 2024 while managing a hospital in the northern Gaza Strip—and the Israeli organization Standing Together.
The winner will be decided on October 22 by the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament. The official award ceremony is scheduled to take place on December 16 in Strasbourg, France.
