Sakhela Buhlungu resigns as University of Fort Hare Vice-Chancellor

Professor Sakhela Buhlungu, the Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University of Fort Hare, has resigned amid ongoing disciplinary proceedings. Buhlungu submitted his resignation shortly before he was scheduled to present his defense at a hearing regarding allegations of gross misconduct, insubordination, and bringing the university into disrepute.

The charges stem from a forensic investigation into the appointment of two executive directors, which allegedly occurred without the necessary approval from the University Council or consultation with the Senate and Institutional Forum. Buhlungu has disputed these allegations and challenged the fairness of the process.

While the University Council initially rejected Buhlungu’s request for his resignation to take effect immediately, citing contractual notice period requirements, they have since reversed that decision. The Council agreed to shorten his notice period, setting his departure date for 23 October. However, the Council confirmed that the disciplinary proceedings will continue to their conclusion in accordance with due process.
