Sakura Internet reports unauthorized access to 583 rental server accounts
Sakura Internet has announced that a portion of its Sakura Rental Server customer environments was targeted by unauthorized third-party access. The company detected anomalies in its server environment on August 9 and subsequently launched an investigation.
As of the announcement, 583 accounts have been confirmed as victims of unauthorized logins. The investigation revealed that attackers accessed the company's management environment to reach customer environments, potentially viewing or acquiring personal data and information protected under the secrecy of communications. Malware was also discovered on some servers.
Sakura Internet has taken containment measures, including invalidating authentication credentials and blocking unauthorized access paths. The company has also removed the identified malware and is conducting a forensic investigation in cooperation with external specialists. To ensure security, certain service functions—such as database upgrades, plan changes, and migration tools—have been temporarily restricted. The company has notified affected users individually and reported the incident to relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications and the Personal Information Protection Commission.
