Sal Island faces flooding from Tropical Storm Gonzalo

Tropical Storm Gonzalo is causing significant flooding and maritime disruption on Sal Island, Cabo Verde. The storm, which developed from an Atlantic depression, has brought heavy rain, strong wind gusts, and rising sea levels to the archipelago.

In the tourist hub of Santa Maria, high tides and heavy surf have flooded main avenues and impacted several hotels. Local civil protection officials reported that the sea level rise has inundated urban streets, with footage showing a medical clinic surrounded by water. Additional damage includes fallen trees, downed lighting poles, and damaged construction fences.

Emergency services, including firefighters and national and municipal police, have been deployed to monitor the situation and assist affected areas. Authorities had previously issued alerts regarding high waves that could reach up to six meters. Forecasts suggest the storm may intensify before weakening over the weekend.
