Slava Veder, Pulitzer-winning photographer of ‘Burst of Joy,’ dies at 99
Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Slava ‘Sal’ Veder has died at the age of 99. A longtime photographer for the Associated Press, Veder passed away in his sleep at his home in El Dorado County, California, on August 22, just days before his 100th birthday.
Veder is most famous for his iconic 1974 Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph, ‘Burst of Joy.’ The image captured the emotional moment Lt. Col. Robert L. Stirm, a U.S. Air Force officer, was reunited with his four children at Travis Air Force Base following five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. The photograph became a lasting symbol of the end of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.
During his three-decade career with the AP, which spanned from 1961 to 1993, Veder documented numerous significant political and social moments. He was a native of the San Francisco Bay Area and was known for his ability to capture profound human emotion through his lens.
