Sala Nezahualcóyotl reopens after renovation at UNAM

The Sala Nezahualcóyotl at UNAM is reopening following a five-month comprehensive renovation. The project aimed to improve infrastructure and facilities while preserving the original architectural design by Arcadio Artís and the renowned acoustics established by engineer Christopher Jaffe.

The reopening, scheduled for Saturday, September 26, serves as a multi-faceted celebration. It marks the 90th anniversary of the UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra (OFUNAM), the 50th anniversary of the Sala Nezahualcóyotl, the 475th anniversary of the University of Mexico, and the 5th anniversary of the Festival CulturaUNAM.

A highlight of the reopening is the world premiere of ‘Fanfarria Volcánica’ by two-time Grammy winner and UNAM professor Gabriela Ortiz. The orchestral work is a tribute to the university and explores themes of ancestral environments, such as lava and volcanic stones. The premiere will be performed by OFUNAM, with additional performances scheduled for Sunday, September 27, featuring cellist Mischa Maisky.
