Saladin Monument relocated from Damascus Citadel for restoration

The Damascus Governorate has begun the process of relocating the Saladin Monument from its current position in front of the Damascus Citadel. The move is part of a broader project to rehabilitate the area surrounding the citadel to improve the service, aesthetic, and urban landscape of the historic district.

According to official statements, the relocation is being carried out by the Old Damascus Directorate in cooperation with the HAND organization, based on a technical report from the Damascus Antiquities Department. The primary objectives are to repair damage to the monument and preserve its artistic and historical value through maintenance and restoration.

While the authorities have not officially confirmed a new location, they stated that they are studying and preparing a suitable site that allows visitors to view the monument from various angles while respecting the urban and heritage privacy of the city. The monument, designed in 1993 to mark the 800th anniversary of Saladin's death, depicts the leader on horseback accompanied by soldiers.
