Kenya transport tragedies: 17 pilgrims killed in crash and fuel tanker explosion
A series of fatal transport incidents occurred in Kenya. Seventeen Catholic pilgrims from the St. Matthias Mulumba Parish in Mikindani died in a multi-vehicle collision at Salama while traveling to the Subukia National Marian Shrine for a National Prayer Day.
The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has dispatched a multi-disciplinary investigation team to the site. Officials noted that the Mlima Kiu - Salama stretch is a known blackspot. President William Ruto expressed his condolences to the affected families.
In a separate incident, a fuel tanker exploded shortly after midnight at Sachangwan on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway. The Kenya Red Cross reported two casualties and confirmed that a multi-agency team contained the fire. The explosion caused the closure of the highway at the Kibunja and Soilo interchanges to facilitate emergency operations.
