Salamanca authorities address rising crime and school security
Security officials in Salamanca, Guanajuato, are implementing measures to combat rising crime rates and protect educational institutions. Following the kidnapping of a CONALEP student in October, the Director General of Public Security, Juan Pablo Ramírez Talavera, announced plans to expand police patrols across more than 300 schools. Due to limited personnel, patrols will operate on a rotational basis during morning and afternoon entry and exit hours, with coordination involving state and federal forces.
Local crime statistics from May to September 2026 indicate that theft and domestic violence remain the most prevalent offenses. Domestic violence cases rose by 21.7 percent in September, while extortion reports also saw an increase. Officials noted that actual extortion figures may be significantly higher than reported due to underreporting by victims.
Additionally, insecurity has impacted local commerce and transportation. Taxi drivers in the region have been forced to curtail their working hours, often stopping service by 7:00 PM, due to frequent robberies occurring in both central areas and residential neighborhoods.
