Salamanca livestock heritage: Morucha cattle breed recognized

Joaquín Antonio Pino, the Counselor for Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Affairs, and Environmental Policy, has advocated for the Morucha cattle breed to be recognized as livestock heritage of Salamanca. During an event held at the Castro-Enríquez farm, Pino emphasized that the breed is “closely linked to Salamanca” and must be maintained through profitable farming operations that support young professionals.

Data from the Genealogical Book as of 2025 shows 15,176 purebred animals and approximately 185 active farms, with 90% located in Salamanca. While the breed showed signs of stabilization recently, the number of Morucha cows aged up to 14 years decreased by 47% between 2011 and 2023. The breed maintains a fertility rate of 78.19% as of 2023.
