Salamanca to use AI for province-wide asbestos detection

The Diputación de Salamanca has launched a tender for a technical study to create an inventory of asbestos installations and sites across the province. The project aims to identify asbestos in municipalities with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants, covering a total area of 11,905 square kilometers.

The study will utilize remote sensing and Artificial Intelligence applied to high-resolution aerial imagery to locate potential asbestos roofing with a target reliability of over 90 percent. This technological approach will be supplemented by on-the-ground technical validation, including photography and geolocation. The inventory will cover roofs, facades, downspouts, and municipal water and sanitation networks.

The project has a base budget of 217,800 euros and an expected execution period of eight months. It is supported by a 150,000 euro subsidy from the Junta de Castilla y León to assist in censusing locations in municipalities with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants. The resulting georeferenced inventory is intended to help local governments plan the safe and efficient removal of the material in accordance with current regulations.
