Salamina fires: Two dead and suspected arson in multiple locations

Authorities are investigating two separate fires that broke out in Salamina, one of which resulted in the deaths of two elderly residents, aged 72 and 91. The first fire, located in the Peristiria area, has been linked by preliminary findings to potential negligence. Investigators identified the 'point zero' near a stream on Andromachis Road, where the victims were found. Evidence collected from a nearby residence includes lighters and incense coals, which are being examined. Officials are also analyzing removed electrical cable segments to determine if a network fault contributed to the blaze.

The second fire, which occurred in the Selinia area approximately 10 to 20 minutes after the first, shows strong indications of arson. A witness reported seeing a dark vehicle stop by the roadside, after which a white object was thrown, triggering the fire.

Damage assessments are underway, with reports indicating approximately 15 buildings, including homes and businesses, have been affected. Inspections by the General Secretariat for the Recovery of Natural Disasters began on Tuesday to facilitate state aid applications for victims. Deputy Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Kostas Katsafados stated that all possibilities, including arson, remain under investigation.
