Salamis fire investigation points to dangerous game by minors
Authorities in Salamis are investigating a fire in the Prophet Elias area, which is suspected to have been caused by a dangerous game played by minors. This incident marks the third fire on the island within a 48-hour period.
A 14-year-old boy provided a statement to police, noting that he was sitting on a bench when the fire broke out. He reported that his friend admitted to accidentally starting the blaze while playing with a lighter and pine needles. Following the incident, the teenager called the emergency number 112 and alerted his mother, who encouraged him to report the matter to the authorities.
Fire service investigators found cigarette butts and energy drink cans at the suspected starting point. They also conducted a reconstruction of the path from the ignition site to where security cameras captured the youths calling for help. The timing of this movement aligns with the start of the fire, strengthening the theory of accidental ignition during play. A second teenager is expected to be summoned for questioning.
