Salamina: Man arrested for arson by negligence during welding

A 49-year-old man has been arrested for arson by negligence in Aiantio, Salamina, after causing a fire on Sunday, August 23, 2026. The fire, which broke out around 12:30 PM, was triggered by sparks during welding work.

The blaze burned approximately 100 square meters of low vegetation and dry grass. Following the incident, the man was apprehended by the Arson Crimes Investigation Units of the Greek Fire Service and issued an administrative fine of 2,594.23 euros. He is scheduled to appear before the relevant Prosecuting Authority on Monday, August 24.

The Greek Fire Service reported that from January 1 to August 23, 2026, a total of 737 administrative fines have been issued, amounting to 1,198,080.68 euros. During this period, 310 arrests were made, with 89.03% involving negligence and 10.97% involving intentional arson.
