Summerland wildfire rescue reunites injured cat with family

wildfire rescue animal emergency response B.C. SPCA pet reunification Bald Range wildfire

A black cat named Salem has been reunited with its family after being rescued during the Bald Range wildfire near Summerland. The cat was discovered by a worker behind the fire line and subsequently treated for severe burns on its paws, dehydration, and ear mites.

During its recovery, the cat was placed with a foster family and nicknamed ‘Whiskey’ due to its singed whiskers. The B.C. SPCA facilitated the reunion after the cat's story was shared on social media, allowing a displaced family to recognize him. The B.C. SPCA noted that this rescue highlights the scale of animal emergency response during wildfire seasons, reporting that they have provided emergency boarding for 108 pets this summer alone.
