Salento coast patrols lead to illegal fishing seizure and vessel rescue

Carabinieri conducted maritime patrols along the Salento coast between Gallipoli, Nardò, and Porto Cesareo to combat environmental crimes and ensure maritime safety. During the operation, specialized divers from the Pescara Underwater Unit rescued a vessel with a blocked propeller.

Following the rescue, authorities identified an instance of illegal fishing involving a 58-year-old local man. The individual used prohibited breathing apparatus combined with a speargun to catch a grouper. The speargun was recovered at a depth of 25 meters, posing a potential public safety risk.

In collaboration with the Gallipoli Port Authority, officials seized the diving equipment and issued a 1,000 euro administrative fine. The seized fish was subsequently donated to a local charity after being verified for suitability.
