Venice boat collision kills newlywed couple

A tragic boat collision in the Venice Lagoon has claimed the lives of a newlywed couple. Sean Michieli, a 25-year-old fisherman, and his 26-year-old pregnant wife, Gabriella Querino, a Brazilian national, died following a collision between their small fishing boat and a water taxi in the Tessera Canal.

Michieli was rescued from the water but succumbed to severe head injuries at a hospital. After several days of intensive search operations involving divers, helicopters, and sonar equipment, Querino’s body was recovered near the island of Campalto. Venice Mayor Simone Venturini confirmed the discovery, expressing deep condolences to the families.

The Venice Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a nautical homicide investigation. Authorities are examining whether the water taxi was traveling above the speed limit and considering environmental factors such as fog and darkness. The 38-year-old driver of the water taxi is currently under investigation.
