Salento region in Italy celebrates summer festivals and highlights hidden cultural attractions

Throughout August, the Salento area of Italy's Province of Lecce hosts a series of traditional summer festivals. Events run from August 1 to August 9 and include the Mercatino del gusto in Maglie, the Birra e sound gathering in Galatina, historic processions in Copertino and Neviano, food fairs in Felline and Minervino di Lecce, and music and food festivals in Lecce and Vaste. Each celebration combines local devotion, folklore and regional cuisine.

At the same time, travel writers emphasize Salento's lesser‑known cultural sites. Medieval villages such as Melpignano, Specchia and Galatone showcase stone streets, baroque churches and preserved walls. The region also features rupestrian churches, notably the cave‑carved San Nicola in Melendugno, offering a glimpse of early monastic life. These hidden treasures complement the coastal attractions and encourage visitors to explore the interior of the Salento peninsula.
