Salento fatal collision kills married couple; driver arrested
A fatal head-on collision on the SP 17 provincial road between Salice Salentino and Veglie in Salento has claimed the lives of a married couple. The victims, Dario Serra, 51, and Giovanna Serpi, 47, were residents of Nocera Superiore in the province of Salerno and were traveling toward Porto Cesareo in a Fiat Panda.
According to investigations by the Carabinieri, the accident occurred when a Mercedes Classe A, traveling in the opposite direction, crossed the center line and entered the couple's lane. The impact was so violent that the Fiat Panda was reduced to wreckage, requiring firefighters to extract the bodies of the victims.
The driver of the Mercedes, a 41-year-old man from San Pietro Vernotico, was seriously injured and transported to the Vito Fazzi hospital in Lecce. Following medical tests, the driver tested positive for alcohol and narcotics, including cocaine and cannabinoids. He has been arrested on charges of road homicide and placed under house arrest pending further investigation.
