Salerno: Codacons launches initiative against illegal public space occupation

The consumer association Codacons Campania has launched the ‘Salerno Liberi dai Dehors’ initiative to address widespread citizen dissatisfaction regarding the illegal occupation of public spaces in Salerno. Residents have reported numerous instances of outdoor structures, such as platforms, tables, and umbrellas, obstructing sidewalks and making pedestrian movement difficult across various districts, including the Historic Center, Lungomare, and Torrione.

Codacons is currently compiling a dossier of these reports to be submitted to the Mayor and local police to ensure compliance with municipal regulations for public land use. Matteo Marchetti, President of Codacons Campania, emphasized that maintaining urban decorum is a collective responsibility involving citizens, associations, and business owners.

The association plans to transform collected evidence—including photos and maps of abuses or violations of Superintendency rules—into formal complaints directed to the Municipality of Salerno, the Public Prosecutor's Office, and the Local Police Command. The goal is to secure stricter controls, sanctions, and the forced removal of structures lacking valid permits.
