Salerno Mayor warns of dramatic cost of living crisis

Salerno Mayor Vincenzo De Luca has warned of a dramatic social problem regarding the rising cost of living. Speaking at a conference at the University of Salerno, De Luca noted that economic consequences and social impacts of the war in Ukraine have been underestimated by Western governments.

He highlighted specific local impacts, stating that some supermarket shelves in Salerno, particularly in the fruit section, are now empty. De Luca emphasized that the economic fallout is affecting various sectors, including transportation.

Regarding ongoing protests, the mayor urged a distinction between genuine social grievances and other forms of mobilization. He suggested that some youth protests may be influenced by generational factors and imitative behaviors seen in France and Spain, rather than purely economic concerns.
