Salerno prison faces severe overcrowding with 580 inmates in 300-capacity facility

The Fuorni prison in Salerno is facing a severe overcrowding crisis, with approximately 580 inmates currently housed in a facility designed for only 300 people. The situation was highlighted during a visit by Samuele Ciambriello, the Campania Guarantor for the Rights of Persons Deprived of Liberty, who visited the institution alongside Archbishop Andrea Bellandi.

During the inspection, several critical issues were raised regarding living conditions and the management of inmates with specific needs. One notable case involved a female inmate with a disability weighing approximately 250 kilograms. The Guarantor questioned the compatibility of her continued detention with her physical condition and the facility's ability to provide adequate medical and physical assistance. Authorities are currently evaluating whether alternatives to incarceration are appropriate for her situation.
