Salerno–Avellino highway expansion faces funding and timeline uncertainty

The Feneal Uil union is calling for clarity and immediate action regarding the construction of a third lane on the Salerno–Avellino link road. The urgency follows a temporary closure on October 29, caused by a vehicle striking a flyover, which highlighted the critical importance of this connection for the Irno Valley, local workers, students, and businesses.

The project involves a 9.4 kilometer stretch between Fratte and Mercato San Severino, affecting the territories of Salerno, Pellezzano, Baronissi, and Fisciano. While the expansion is intended to improve mobility and support the regional economy, significant discrepancies exist regarding its financing.

Public statements suggest approximately 400 million euros have been allocated with an additional 60 million euros required. However, official financial data from November 2025 indicates a total cost of roughly 457 million euros, with only 109 million euros available and a remaining requirement of 348 million euros. Furthermore, the project timeline remains unclear, as official documentation shows the definitive project is still undergoing the authorization process, despite previous schedules aiming for completion of various stages between 2025 and 2026.
