Saleswoman in Hunan rents office restroom to save on housing costs

A 19-year-old saleswoman, surnamed Yang, gained social media attention in China for choosing to live in a 6-square-meter office restroom to save money on rent. Working at a furniture store in Zhuzhou, Hunan, Yang earned a monthly salary of 2,700 NDT, while local rent prices ranged from 800 to 1,800 NDT.

To minimize expenses, she negotiated with her employer to rent the office restroom for 50 NDT per month. The space, which contains two squat toilets and a sink, serves as a public restroom during the day and her private living quarters at night. She equipped the area with a folding bed, a small pot for cooking, curtains, and clothing racks.

Yang reported feeling safe despite the unconventional living arrangement, noting that the company's 24-hour surveillance cameras provided security. Her decision was driven by a long-term savings goal, as she limited her monthly spending to approximately 300-400 NDT.
