Salford unveils mural honoring post-punk legend Mark E Smith

A large-scale ceramic and glass mural has been installed in Salford to celebrate the life of Mark E Smith, the influential post-punk musician and frontman of the band The Fall. Located at the junction of Lower Broughton Road and Great Clowes Street, the artwork was created by public artist Mark Kennedy. The mural is based on a photograph of Smith holding a buttercup.

The unveiling is part of the Salford 100 programme, which commemorates a century since the city was granted city status. Smith, a Salford native who grew up in Lower Broughton, was a significant cultural figure known for his deep-rooted Northern working-class musical influence. Before his music career, he worked as a shipping clerk at the Salford Docks.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett described Smith as a “Salford legend and cultural icon,” noting that the tribute is expected to attract fans from around the world. Kennedy, who has worked on public art projects in Greater Manchester for over three decades, described the project as a “great honour.”
