Sali Berisha faces criticism over Democratic Party renewal process

The Democratic Party of Albania (PD) is undergoing a process labeled as “Ripërtëritje” (Renewal) by its leader, Sali Berisha. This initiative aims to remove critics, rebels, and perceived mediocre members from the party ranks.

Critics of the move argue that the process is not a true renewal but rather a reconfirmation of Berisha’s long-standing leadership and a way to fill vacancies with loyalists. Skeptics point to the departure of over 900 members, including former founders and branch leaders, and question whether the party can effectively compete against Edi Rama and the Socialist majority in upcoming elections without a genuine influx of new intellectual elites or youth.
