Sali Berisha arrives in the US for first visit in five years

Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party of Albania, has arrived in the United States for a political visit, marking his first trip to the country in five years following the removal of travel restrictions that had previously designated him ‘non grata’.

Upon arrival, Berisha was met by members of the Albanian diaspora. His agenda includes meetings with the Albanian community in New Jersey as part of the ‘Freedom Works’ activity and participation in events related to the Republican Party and the International Democrat Union (IDU). Berisha described the trip as a significant moment for Albania, stating he intended to meet friends and declare, ‘I came’.

Political analysts have noted that while Berisha has secured a visa through specific mechanisms, his ‘non grata’ status remains a point of contention. Some observers suggest the visit is a strategic move to engage with international allies, while others, such as Dashamir Shehi, argue the trip does not fundamentally alter the political standing or challenges of the Albanian opposition.
