Salicylic acid expands from facial acne treatments to body care

Salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) derived from willow tree bark or synthesized in labs, is seeing increased use in both facial and body skincare. Because it is oil-soluble, the ingredient can penetrate pores to break down dead skin cells, excess oil, and impurities, making it effective for treating acne, smoothing bumpy texture, and fading dark spots.

A growing trend known as the ‘skinification’ of body care has led to an increase in products like 360-degree body sprays designed to treat the back, shoulders, and chest. The salicylic acid market is projected to grow from a significant base to reach approximately $880.4 million by 2030, according to Grand View Research.

While beneficial for controlling oily skin and boosting collagen, experts note that improper use can damage the skin's moisture barrier, leading to redness and flakiness. Proper application and concentration are essential to achieving benefits such as improved cell turnover and smoother skin texture without causing irritation.
