Salish Sea ghost gear cleanup documented by YouTuber
Diver Ryan Swan, creator of the YouTube channel Be Sea Adventures, has released a video documenting a conservation effort in the Salish Sea near Sidney. The footage highlights a permitted cleanup conducted on October 4, where a team of volunteer divers and community partners removed approximately 250 kilograms of ghost gear, including abandoned crab traps, nets, rope, cable, and line.
Swan stated that while the project's impact is small compared to the total amount of ghost gear lost in oceans annually, the goal is to increase awareness of the issue. The video also features educational elements, such as quiz questions regarding ghost gear, to engage viewers. Swan has previously used his platform to highlight rare species, such as the ancient cloud sponges found in the Saanich Inlet.
