UniCredit accelerates plans to take control of Commerzbank by early 2027

UniCredit CEO Andrea Orcel is reportedly accelerating plans to take control of Commerzbank, aiming for a takeover as early as January 2027. According to reports from the Financial Times and Reuters, Orcel intends to call an extraordinary general meeting once regulatory approvals are secured. His strategy includes replacing all 10 shareholder-appointed members of Commerzbank’s 20-person supervisory board and potentially removing CEO Bettina Orlopp.

The German government has expressed specific conditions for the takeover, insisting that Commerzbank remains a publicly listed company with its headquarters in Frankfurt and continues to support the German ‘Mittelstand’ sector. While Berlin has recently softened its stance, it continues to seek binding commitments regarding the bank’s location and employment rights.

In separate market activity, Deutsche Bank AG completed a share buyback program as of September 25, 2026, having repurchased 15,063,631 shares, which accounts for 0.8% of its share capital. Additionally, Siemens Healthineers AG reported the repurchase of 160,000 shares between September 21 and September 27, 2026.
