Salling Group establishes 51 emergency preparedness stores in Denmark

Salling Group, Denmark’s largest grocery retailer, is working to establish 51 nationwide emergency preparedness stores to ensure citizens have access to essential goods during crisis situations. The network will consist of 17 Bilka locations, 32 Føtex warehouses, and two Netto stores, with a goal of being ready by 2027.

The stores will prioritize a selection of approximately 50 critical items based on government recommendations for home preparedness. This inventory includes long-lasting goods such as canned food, oats, protein bars, and rice cakes, as well as hygiene products, wet wipes, diapers, batteries, and matches.

CEO Anders Hagh noted that the primary logistical challenge is managing the constant rotation of these thousands of items to prevent expiration. The company aims to ensure these goods are available daily and remain accessible during a crisis, while also supporting government advice for citizens to maintain their own small home supplies.
