Solar eclipse triggers surge in demand for protective eyewear

A solar eclipse has triggered a massive surge in demand for certified protective eyewear across Germany and Denmark. In Denmark, the Salling Group reported selling 120,000 pairs of eclipse glasses, with approximately 70,000 remaining from an initial stock of 350,000. Some retailers, such as Bilka in Odense, have already reported being sold out.

In Germany, long queues have formed at opticians to secure remaining stock. In Nuremberg, a 250-meter-long line formed at Optiker Schlemmer, where the proprietor reported selling 500 pairs in a single hour and ordered 6,000 additional units via express delivery. Similar shortages and long wait times were noted in Biberach.

Meteorologists note that while weather conditions vary, clear skies in many areas are encouraging large numbers of people to observe the event, necessitating the use of specialized eye protection to prevent ocular damage.
