Sally Field addresses trade tensions and media mergers at Emmys
During the 2026 Emmy Awards, actress Sally Field used her acceptance speech for Outstanding Actress in a TV Movie/Limited Series to address political and industry tensions. While accepting the award for the Netflix drama ‘Remarkably Bright Creatures’—which was filmed in Canada—Field referred to Canada as ‘neighbours’ and ‘friends.’ Her comments were seen as a response to the trade tensions and tariff policies between the United States and Canada under the Trump administration, as well as pressure on Hollywood to end outsourced filming.
Field also addressed the media landscape, specifically the proposed merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery. She emphasized the importance of artistic independence, stating that the industry’s unique storytelling and diverse voices must not be ‘silenced or compromised or merged.’
In a separate moment during the ceremony, actor and director Michael J. Fox was introduced as a ‘proud son of Canada’ while accepting the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award.
