Sally Rooney books withdrawn from UK over Palestine Action support

Irish novelist Sally Rooney and her publisher, Faber & Faber, have announced the withdrawal of her books from the United Kingdom market in all formats. The decision follows Rooney’s public commitment to donate her royalties to Palestine Action, a group the British government proscribed as a terrorist organization in July 2025.

Under current UK anti-terrorism legislation, providing financial support to a proscribed group is a criminal offense. Faber & Faber stated that the law creates a situation where they cannot legally transfer earnings generated from UK sales to Rooney. The publisher described the inability to pass on an author's earnings as an “unconscionable situation.”

Rooney, known for bestsellers such as “Normal People” and “Intermezzo,” expressed her willingness to accept the consequences of her beliefs. While her works are being removed from the UK, Faber & Faber confirmed they will continue to publish and sell her books in other territories, including Ireland, where Palestine Action is not a prohibited organization.
