Salman Akbar analyzes India and Pakistan hockey trajectories
Former Pakistan hockey captain Salman Akbar has attributed India’s recent international success to sustained investment in its domestic hockey structure and grassroots ecosystem. Akbar noted that India’s turnaround followed its failure to qualify for the 2008 Olympics, leading to the establishment of the Hockey India League and a consistent year-round competitive schedule. This investment has contributed to India’s recent Olympic bronze medals in Tokyo and Paris.
In contrast, Akbar identified the lack of a robust domestic platform as a primary reason for the decline of Pakistan hockey. While Pakistan has returned to the men’s World Cup after an eight-year absence, the team recently finished last in the Pro League.
Looking ahead to the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, Akbar expressed confidence that India will reach the top eight based on their recent form in the Pro League. However, he warned that the challenge will intensify significantly once the tournament moves beyond the pool stages.
